Senior Fitness: Walking A Great Way To Shape

So, you looked out your window and saw your sixty-five year old neighbor fully dressed in her workout gear coming home from a jog. You wondered how it is that she is out there staying so active and all you can find the energy to do is turn channels on the television. Well, get on up and join the fun of being active even as you get older. Walking is a great start to senior fitness!

If you're just getting started with being more active, one of the best places to start is your own neighborhood. Walking is probably the most common activity for seniors. It doesn't sound like much, but don't let it fool you.

Perhaps you are worried about health risks now that you are older. Blood pressure, worries over heart attacks, restless nights, losing that keenness of mind can be troubling. Well, walking has tremendous health benefits and once you start, you will feel the effects right away.

First of all, walking gets the blood flowing. It improves circulation which means better utilization of oxygen in the body. This equates to improved functions of all the organs of the body including the heart and lungs. The heart's resting rate will decrease which means reduced risk for heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure. Walking also releases endorphins which alleviate depression and stress. For you, this means being more relaxed and having a sharper mind. This will also lead to a better sleep.

Even a simple exercise like walking can be dangerous unless you are careful. Always check you're your doctor to make sure it is okay to begin exercising. Make sure you are well hydrated at all times and are properly equipped to face the weather (sunscreen or a hat for sunny days, warm jacket for cold days) and proper walking shoes. Always wear any medical I. D. Bracelets or dog tags, carry a cell phone for emergencies and never push yourself too hard.
