Senior Retirement is something that many people look forward to all their working life. They dream of cruises, trips, working on a project, or other items of interest. For some this comes true; however, others are not as fortunate.
If planning on retiring at a certain age there are several things to consider. Most important, of course, is how much income will be received from the retirement plan. Some people are fortunate and are able to have both company and social security retirement incomes.
The amount received from a company and from social security depends, of course, on a person's work record. If fortunate enough to stay with one company for many years then the combination gives one a comfortable income for retirement. This is one good reason to stick with a company if you have a good job.
Unfortunately, with the economic problems we have had the past few years, some people have lost all their retirement. This is a very sad situation. It means that one must continue working, if possible, just to earn a living with no hope of ever retiring. Social Security can still be applied for, but the amount is reduced, up to a certain age, if still working.
For those who can retire, for the most part, they encounter problems not considered previously. For one thing they must understand that their income will be significantly reduced compared to what they are used to living on. This is difficult for those who are used to "living it up." A common thing, like buying gifts for the grandchildren, sometimes has to take a back seat when faced with paying the ever growing grocery and utility bills.
It is important to sit down and figure out one's expenses, including property taxes, any payments which will continue after retirement, health insurance, and monthly bills. Sometimes it will be apparent that one's lifestyle must change if one is to enjoy their retirement. Some people sell their home and move to a smaller community which operates at a slower pace and is less expensive.
It has often been said that "retirement ain't for sissies." This is very true. But, if one is careful, Senior Retirement can be an entirely new adventure filled with surprises. All it takes is careful planning.
